Our Guide to Solar Panel & Installation Prices

Solar powered homes are the future. Fossil fuels are expected to run dry within the next fifty years and greenhouse gases are harming the planet. It’s no wonder that people are turning their attention towards solar energy as a source to power their homes.

Solar energy could help you reduce your energy bills significantly too (by up to 50% a month) and with the help of the Smart Export Guaranteeopen in a new window homeowners will be able to convert any unused energy that is exported back to the grid to cash.

There’s no better time than now to invest in Solar. 840,000 homes across the UK now use solar power, and solar panel prices have fallen by nearly 70% from 2010 – making solar technology more appealing than ever.

We’ve put together a small solar panel price guide, covering all the things you need to know about solar panels, should you be contemplating a greener approach to generating electricity for your home.

* This guide was designed to give you a quick idea of solar panels and solar panel prices; however, we’d always recommend you seek advice from a qualified MCS installer who will more accurately be able to assess your home’s energy needs.

  • How Much do Solar Panels Cost?

On average, solar panels will cost a typical UK household supporting a family of three between £4000 to £8000; however solar panel prices will vary depending on your home’s energy needs and the type of panels and size of system installed. For example black monocrystalline silicon solar panels (the black ones) are more expensive than polycrystalline (identifiable by a blue marbled appearance).

    * Solar panel systems are also known as photovoltaics (solar PV). The panels capture and convert the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells. The output of a photovoltaic cell is measured in kilowatt peak (kWp), which is the total energy it can create during peak performance in summer months.

It’s important to get the right number of solar panels for your home, certain factors e.g. the number of occupants in your household and the size of your property will ultimately determine the size of the solar panel system required.

The typical solar panel is 250 watts. As such, you would require four panels for a 1kWp system, eight for a 2kWp system and 16 for a 4kWp system. The amount of electricity you generate will also depend on the location. If you live in the South of England, you’ll typically see a lot of sun and on a 4kWp system could generate up to 4,200 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. In Scotland, however this will be lower at around 3,400 kilowatt hours annually.

To put this into context a three bedroom house for example would require a 3-4kWp solar panel system to meet the higher electricity demands. That includes approximately 12-16 solar panels covering 21-28m² of roof space. It may sound obvious but a system with higher levels of efficiency and power (more panels) will bring the most energy to your home but this also comes at a premium.

Use the table below as only a rough indication of solar panel prices; we’d always recommend you seek advise from a qualified solar installer, who’ll be more accurately able to estimate the size and price of a solar panel system suitable for your home.

Solar Panel Size Solar Panels Price Roof Space Yearly Output Occupants
Solar Panel Size: 1kWp Solar Panels: 4 Price: £1,500 - £3,000 Roof Space: 8m² Yearly Output: 850 kWh Occupants: 1
Solar PV Size: 2kWp Solar Panels: 8 Price: £3,000 - £5,000 Roof Space: 14m² Yearly Output: 1,700 kWh Occupants: 2
Solar PV Size: 3kWp Solar Panels: 12 Price: £5,000 - £6,000 Roof Space: 21m² Yearly Output: 2,550 kWh Occupants: 3
Solar PV Size: 4kWp Solar Panels: 16 Price: £6,000 - £8,000 Roof Space: 28m² Yearly Output: 3,800 kWh Occupants: 4+
  • The price you’ll pay for solar panels will depend on three variables. You’ll need to think about, efficiency, the type of panels and the numbers you need.

How many Solar Panels do I need?

If your home has a large demand for electricity then a solar panel system consisting of 16 panels (4kWp) would be a good fit but will cost more money. The standard for a one-person home is a 1 kWp system which requires about four panels and costing roughly £2,000 in total. Two people will require a 2 kWp system with approximately eight panels for £4,000. A family of four will typically require a 4 kWp system and this will be priced around £8,000.

    Type of Solar Panels

There are two main types of solar panels. Both monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels are made from silicon. However, Monocrystalline cells offer a higher level of durability and efficiency. As such, while they do cost more they provide greater value.

    Efficiency

Solar panel efficiency refers to how much sunlight the system can convert into energy. More expensive solar PV systems tend to offer a greater level of efficiency, providing more value in the long term.

If you have a greater level of roof space, you will gain more value by purchasing a high number of cheaper panels. In contrast, those with limited roof space can benefit from purchasing fewer panels that offer increased efficiency for a higher price.

Currently the best solar panels on the market can offer nearly 23% efficiency, simply put this is the amount of sunlight consumed that can be converted to electricity for your home.

  • With solar panels, you can reduce your energy spending by generating your own power instead of relying on the Grid. As soon as you have your panels installed you’ll be able to gain clean energy from sunlight. But how much will you save?

Based on reports from the Energy Saving Trust, a typical 4 kWp solar PV system can generate around 4,200 kilowatt hours of electricity a year when situated in the South of England, saving you as much as £220 annually. As well as this, more than 80% of homeowners reported they were able to cut down their monthly energy bills by as much as 50% using solar power.

  • Ultimately, how much you save with your solar PV system will depend on the level of energy you can produce and the amount you use. If you’re at work through the day, you won’t gain the benefits of the energy your panels produce during these peak sunlight hours. That’s why you should consider a solar battery.

With a solar battery, you can store the electricity produced by your panels when you’re not at home. This means that in the evenings and mornings when there are lower levels of sunlight, you can use the saved power. That will ensure your energy savings climb even higher!

  • The popularity of solar panels in the UK is increasing and renewable energy rose to a record high in the UK in 2018, making up 33% of total power used; solar energy contributed 4%, up 12% from 2017 as reported in the ‘UK Energy Statistics 2018’, published by department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

But should you take the plunge and invest in solar energy? We list the benefits of solar PV to help you decide.

    Cut your Energy Bills

Energy bills are set to double by 2020, taking the average household bill to over £2,500; so take control back by powering your home by solar, after all sunlight is free, and once you’ve paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be reduced.

Get paid for the energy you export to the Grid

Thanks to the 'Smart Export Guaranteeopens in current window' homeowners are able covert any unsued energy they send back to the grid for cash - helping to save on energy bills.

    Cut your Carbon Footprint

Solar electricity is green renewable energy and doesn’t release harmful gases into the earth’s atmosphere, unlike traditional energy options that burn fossil fuels resulting in carbon dioxide (C02) emissions.

    Add value to your property

Should you decide to move out of your home then by installing a solar PV system you may have added value to the property, making it an attractive proposition for potential buyers.

    Low maintenance

Solar panels require little maintenance, homeowners will be pleased to know that it’s mainly a case of keeping them clean and ensuring the coast is clear with regards to exposure to sunlight.
